For the last twenty eight years Akin Adekeye has been running the African Arts and African Kitchen restaurant on Drummond Street. He serves up a delicious fusion of West African and Caribbean food for diners who can enjoy his culinary delights and feast their eyes on an impressive display of wooden masks and sculptures from the continent.
Over the years his cliental has ranged from art dealers from all over the world to actors and local people. The future of his business along with all the others on Drummond Street is precarious as building work of the High Speed Rail Network or HS2 continues. But, Akin’s optimism is addictive and he says the community continues to flourish.
With a wonderful sense of pride he describes Drummond Street as an oasis in the heart of Kings Cross, although when Lainy Malkani went to meet him and found a six foot wooden giraffe on the door step she wondered if a savanna would be a more appropriate description!
